Phuket is Thailand's largest island, located in the Andaman Sea, west of Peninsular Malaysia. The island is very mountainous with a mountain on the west side of the island aligned from north to south. The mountains of the southern tip of Phuket are a chain of mountains stretching for 440 miles of the Isthmus of Kra. The highest point of the Phuket mountain range is the Khao Phra Mi, with an altitude of 1138m, however, the higher elevation on the island itself is Mai Tha Sip Song (douze cannes), 529 m above the March About 70% of the island is covered with forests. The western coast has several sandy beaches, while on the east coast beaches are more muddy. The southern tip of the island is Laem Promthep, which is a point well appreciated for watching the sunset.

The main tourist area of the island is the beach of Patong, which concentrates too much of the nightlife of Phuket and is the largest shopping center island. Other beaches are the popular Karon Beach, Kata Beach, Nai Harn Beach and Bang Tao beach.
